Laugh if you want, but I still enjoy a good episode of a home improvement show. Since I’m in the middle of a home improvement project myself, I am seeing first hand that there’s no end to all the details and layers of connectivity that this process entails. You may want to repair a small crack in the drywall but, then you realize that paint color has been discontinued so you’ll have to paint the entire room. Think you want to replace the carpet? Great, but first you’ve got to take the bed apart, move the dresser, clear the closet, other furniture, etc. And who chose those curtains? See what I mean? It’s enough to make anyone back away.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new. –II Corinthians 5:17

I’m so thankful that Jesus didn’t allow all the details of our messy lives to scare Him off. Like a contractor preparing a quote for a renovation, He looked at all of our insecurities, flaws, limiting beliefs, even the mistakes we hid in the corners, etc., as he considered every step of the renovation process. And when He counted the cost, there were no miscalculations, no sugar-coating the damage, no discounting the price. But unlike all other contractors, He realized the cost was far more than any human could ever pay so, He paid it HIMSELF! And because of what Jesus did, our lives have been restored, remodeled, renovated, and upgraded beyond recognition.

Those insecurities? They were cleared by Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Those mistakes? They were covered by I John 1:9 (NIV) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Those limiting beliefs? They were completely removed by Matthew 19:26 (NIV) “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jesus mastered the goal, with our lives, of every home improvement project or home renovation professional. He saw our lives as they were and then, with every stroke of His love, every hammer of His grace, and the nails that caused Him to shed His own blood, He left us . . . better than He found us.
