I often read the passage in The Book of Matthew chapter 14 where Peter and the disciples are in a boat during a storm and Jesus comes towards them casually walking on the water.

Initially, they’re fearful. I mean, I’m sure they were asking each other, “Do you guys see what I see?” Some of them thought Jesus was a ghost. But, Peter (my personal favorite), was the only one who asked for evidence. So, from the relative safety of the boat, Peter calls out,“Lord, if that’s you, bid me to come out on the water.”

Now, I don’t know if he realized it or not but, within one request, Peter was asking Jesus for 6 things:

  • Proof
  • Permission 
  • Participation 
  • Provision
  • Progress
  • Protection

There was something in Peter that was never content to “sit in the bleachers.” Peter always wanted in on the action. He knew he was supposed to be able to do everything that Jesus was doing. 

Now, we know that his maturity had to catch up with his desire to mimic the master but Peter was always willing to “do something” and not just hear and watch.

What about you? Jesus’ word to Peter was “Come.” What is the word He’s spoken to YOU? If you’ll leave the boat of your comfort zone, you’ll discover, like Peter, that by acting on Jesus’ word, you will receive:

  1. Proof — That God’s word is true
  2. Permission — To do the impossible 
  3. Participate — In ways that others fear
  4. Provision — To succeed
  5. Progress — Empowerment for the next level
  6. Protection — A shield to overcome adversity 

So, please, don’t just sit in the boat. Do what Jesus has said and, “Come.”

“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water” –Matthew 14:28
