For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. –I John 5:4 NKJV

Imagine this: You’ve opened a bank account online with an initial deposit of $100.00. A week later, you walk into a branch of that bank, approach the teller’s window, and confidently announce your intent to make a $10,000 withdrawal. But you opened the account with a deposit of $100.00.

When the teller screens your account, her smiling expression changes to confusion. “Excuse me, but do you have another account with us?” she asks. You respond, “No, I don’t. Why do you ask?” “Well,” she replies, “You’re requesting to make a $10,000 withdrawal but, according to our records, you’ve only made a single $100.00 deposit.”

Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Yet, when we neglect to spend time in God’s Word and in prayer, we are neglecting to make the spiritual deposits that are necessary to strengthen, protect and move our lives forward.

Then, when tests or temptations come, the account from which we need to withdraw strength, will be deficient. It’s like writing a check in the amount of “victory” with the risk of having it returned to you because of “non-sufficient funds.”

But wait, that’s not the end of the story. Just as the banking industry has a service called “overdraft protection,” that allows your check to be processed even if your account is a little “underfunded,” God provides a coverage called “grace” that can still ensure your victory in the face of defeat. So, when you’ve missed time in His Word; or in prayer, you know what it looks like? It’s when your friends begin to pray for you and they don’t know why. It’s when someone calls and says just the right thing. It’s when you read a blog post that seems to have been written specifically with you in mind because, that’s just how awesome God is.

So, even when your spiritual account is a little “underfunded” (and all of us do sometimes), the grace of God will cover you.

Every time we read God’s word, we’re making a deposit. Every time we pray, we’re making a deposit. Every time we share our faith, we’re making a deposit. If you don’t do these things consistently, you’ll come up short when you need strength to overcome life’s challenges. Why? If there’s no deposit, then you’ll get no return.

So let me encourage you today. Read your Bible. Pray. Speak the Word. Share your faith with others. If you do, when life’s next challenge or test comes around and you write a check in the amount of “victory”, you’ll have more than enough in your account to cover the request.
