The first, First Day of School is always the toughest for young parents. I remember them well. Protecting our children is a top priority but, what do you do when you can no longer keep them within arm’s reach 24 hours/day,7 days/week? I can tell you what I did: I learned to trust in God’s Covenant of Protection. Let me explain.
A covenant is an agreement. It’s a contract. It’s a promise between 2 people, parties or groups. Basically, it says, “We both promise that, from the moment we establish this covenant: ‘What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is yours.’ The results are:
- The strengths of Party 1 compensate for the weaknesses of Party 2.
- The strengths of Party 2 compensate for the weaknesses of Party 1.
When the 2 parties join forces, by establishing a covenant, all weaknesses are eliminated. They become a single force without weaknesses or vulnerabilities.

As Christians, we have a covenant with God. He has eliminated our vulnerabilities through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This allowed us to trade all our weaknesses for all His strength. Some of these exchanges included giving up our:
- Sicknesses for His healing
- Mistakes for His grace and . . .
- Defenselessness for His protection, just to name a few.
How wonderful it is that God, Himself, has agreed to enter covenant with us. What a demonstration of His love and mercy. You’d think it couldn’t get any better than this… and then, it does! “How does it get better?” you ask? See, God didn’t just establish a covenant with us but, He has also made a commitment to the covenant for us. This sounds too good to be true, but it’s really true! Don’t take my word for it, take His:
- My covenant will I not break; nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Psalm 89:34 KJV
- Know therefore that the Lord thy God, He is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. Deuteronomy 7:9 KJV
Now that we have God’s Word that He won’t ever break His covenant, let’s look at a few of the promises written in His Word that focus on our protection.
- The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust my name.
Psalm 91:14 NLT - For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory.
Psalm 32:7 NLT
This school year, as you watch your littles board that big, yellow school bus, or bounce from your car into that seemingly massive school building, have faith and be of good cheer. Know that you’ve got a Covenant of Protection with God Almighty, The Creator of the Universe, and nobody, but nobody, can watch over you, your family and, especially your children, the way that He can. Nobody!
