A few weeks ago . . .

I found myself in a position that didn’t make me doubt I Corinthians 10:13 but, made me question my understanding of it.

In obedience to God, I placed myself in a position that caused some childhood trauma to resurface. Very old wounds were reopened and some of the pain of that time period resurfaced. I asked God if He’d asked me to do something beyond my ability? Or, had I misunderstood that verse? The answer was “neither.”

Sometimes, God allows us to be stretched in ways that exceed our current ability in order to increase our capacity for something that will be required later. It wasn’t about reopening the wound. It was to allow me to see how the hurt caused me no harm. Yes, there was pain but, God took care of 4, 5, 6 (and beyond) year old me. He wanted me to turn my focus from what I’d been through to what His love, protection and grace brought me to since then: victory.

It was an opportunity to see that “despite all you endured, you were never alone. I was there with you. I heard your heart and I answered the prayer your 5 year old self prayed. Yes, this moment is hard but, you’re showing up for it as a woman who has been made WHOLE, not as one who is still wounded.”

He wanted me to take control of the narrative and reframe those years of my life to highlight the outcome, not the ordeal.

So, I realized that as hard as he will try, Satan can’t tempt you beyond what you can bear because, as I Corinthians 10:13 explains in its entirety:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he (GOD) will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Visiting people, places, etc., from the past can be a painful proposition but, don’t neglect to acknowledge, and lean into, the power and presence of Almighty God to bring you through to victory in a way that your circumstances couldn’t outlast, that Satan couldn’t stop, and witnesses can’t deny. No matter how difficult the circumstances, I Corinthians 10:13 reminds us of just another thing Satan CAN’T do.
