In John chapter 16, Jesus is warning the disciples that the times are about to get “interesting.” It’s like looking at a rollercoaster that you’re about to get on:
There will be some climbs, some dips and some… “Help! Get-me-outta-heres!”
Jesus is letting them know that He must go away but, He will come again. His departure will cause them sadness but, that sadness will only be temporary because, He will send a comforter to be with them while He is away.
He goes on to describe their reaction to His departure by comparing it to the pain and sadness a pregnant woman feels when she is in labor. No matter how difficult and intense the delivery process, once the baby is born, the mother experiences so much joy that the pain demanded by the process is quickly forgotten.
Our focus verse is:
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer,
I have overcome the world. John 16:33 NKJV
Look at this verse closely. See the only way you are going to be able to survive these troubled times, with peace, is by remaining IN Him. He says, “In Me you may have peace.” That means that your peace relies on you staying in Him. You will not be able to find peace any other way or in any other location. Your peace is waiting IN HIM.
So, here are 7 ways you can remain in Him to maintain your peace:
- Read and Meditate Scripture
- Pray
- Worship
- Limit Your Media intake
- Resist Fear (You do that by Meditating the Word)
- Speak the Word Only
- Stay connected with other believers/Community
Finally, read the verse again. Not only does Jesus tell us how to have peace in these troubled times, but he goes on encourage the disciples (and us), to “be of good cheer.” I’m sure the disciples are thinking, “What? Are you kidding? Be of good cheer after everything you just told us? How is this even possible?” Then Jesus explains, “I have (already) overcome the world.”
