I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shouted out to my kids, as they headed out the door on their way to the store, “Bring some fruit back!”
Sometimes, I might’ve said, “Don’t forget the apples” or “Remember, red grapes and kiwi!”
Now, imagine yourself heading out of the door, on your way to church, and the Holy Spirit shouts within you, “Bring some fruit back!”
We can get so caught up with preparing for church, meeting up with friends and enjoying the service, that we forget the point of it all. See, the whole point of the worship, the fellowship and the sermon is so that we “bring some fruit back.”
We should think of attending church, the way we approach going to the store. When you leave your house to go to the grocery store, your intention is to bring something back, right? But, many of us are coming home from church, not with empty bags but, with empty spirits.
The feeling of love that was stirred up in your heart during the service, shouldn’t get left on the pew. You’re supposed to bring it back home with you. That freshly stirred bounty of joy? Bring it back home! The patience you demonstrated for your fellow church members? Yeah, bring that same patience and long suffering home to your family.
Just like you don’t get apples every time you go to the grocery store, you probably need some fruit of the spirit restocked more than others every time you go to church. But every Sunday, every church service you attend, should cause an increase or restocking of love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
My point is this. Attending church should never become a mundane event where the effects wear off before you leave the parking lot. No, if you’re going to church, get excited for the praise and worship. Come with anticipation for the word that you’re about to hear. Get all the encouragement and inspiration you need for the days ahead. But be sure to carry it back HOME! Why would you take all those characteristics of the Holy Spirit, all that fruit that just got refreshed during the service, and leave it behind? Don’t do it! Every time you enter the church doors, I hope you remember this post and remember to . . . Bring some fruit back!
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” Galatians 5: 22-23
