Have you ever thought of going somewhere but, when you thought about what it would take to get “appropriately” dressed for it, decided not to go?

I had a friend once tell me that one Saturday, she saw her manager, from work, at the grocery store but because she looked “a hot mess” (meaning no make-up and no salon-styled hair), she went in the opposite direction and left the store quickly. Most of us don’t live the kind of lives that require us to remain ever-photo-shoot-ready.  Real life is messy, and that messiness not only happens around us but also, shows up on us, sometimes.

In contrast, God, The Creator of the Universe, never requires us to have ourselves “pulled together” before we come to Him. He doesn’t place that pressure on us. Thankfully, through Jesus, God invites us daily to “come as we are”–just as we are. So, we can come with messy hair, no make-up, bad habits, broken hearts, unresolved trauma, anxiety, insecurities, and pain in our bodies. We can come with our ignorance, impatience, anger, doubt, confusion and loneliness.

We can come scared, worried, tired, with limitless resources or no resources, at all. Whoever you are, wherever you are, God invites you to … Come as you are. And when you come, don’t be ashamed, don’t hesitate, come boldly.

Hebrews 4:16, says it this way:

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”

Listen, the next time you’re tempted to “get it all together” before you go to God, don’t bother. Go to God just as you are and, if you come as you are, soon enough … He’ll make you as He is.
