When was the last time you invited a friend over to inspect the cleanliness of your home? May I get a show of hands? Show of hands? Anyone? No?

I’m not surprised. It’s hard to imagine myself calling my friend, Nikki, to say, “Hey, Nik, would you do me a favor and come over to tell me if my house is clean enough to you? Just imagine Nikki opening every closet, looking behind furniture as she checks for evidence of my housekeeping skills. That sounds insane, to me and I’ve got three words about this scenario: Never gonna happen!

Ironically, King David in Psalm 139:23, kinda did just that. But instead of requesting a home inspection, David went radical. He asked God to do a heart inspection. See, David knew that his heart had some secret dirt, stubborn stains and sneaky dust bunnies concealed in the nooks, crannies and corners of his consciousness. The King had begun to accept things that were once unacceptable in his life. The non-negotiables had become fewer and the lines he’d drawn between right and wrong had blurred. . . a lot. His sensitivity of heart towards God? Yeah, that had changed, too. He’d become more of a “I’ll-do-whatever-I-want” kind of person.

Now, before you go judging David, remember, this can happen to anyone. I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve missed the mark more times than I care to recall. I’ve even ignored the mark a few times. But, I thank God for David. He provides us with the perfect example to follow in these circumstances. He did what all of us must do, periodically. 

Psalm 139:23

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and known my thoughts. (KJV)

God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and                                                                            sift through all my anxious cares. (TPT)

David asked God to do a heart inspection and the next time you realize you’ve gotten off course, you should ask God for one, too.
