This weekend, I pulled “a Peter”. What do I mean? Well, in the middle of a storm, while I was “walking on water” by speaking the word, focusing on Jesus and going on my casual way, there was a loud crash of waves, that captured my attention. So, I averted my eyes from what I know is true, eternal and lasting, to check my feelings about this big wave. Wrong move. Big mistake. Just like Peter did when he got distracted, I began to sink into what My Lord had placed, solidly, under my feet. My focus went off the rails. But then… Jesus.
In response to “the Peter” I pulled, thankfully, when I cried for help, Jesus reached out and extended His hand of grace to pull me up on my feet, again. Just in time, I was able to reset my gaze, ignore the sounds of the crashing sea, turn a blind eye to the size of the waves and trust the God Who makes all things possible. See, the doubt was in my head, but it never reached my heart.
“Come”, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sin, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ~Matthew 14:29-31
“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. ~Mark 11:22-23
Last weekend, when I “pulled a Peter,” I’m so grateful that Jesus was there, ever-ready, always waiting, to put me back in position to walk confidently, boldly and fearlessly… on the waves of His grace.
