So last week’s I Pulled a Peter blog was about how I was dealing with a storm by keeping my eyes on Jesus, speaking God’s word, “walking on the water” and doing all the faith-filled things…until I wasn’t. What happened? I let a “commotion” — something the enemy stirred up, to grab my attention and make feel as if I was sinking. Thankfully, I called on Jesus and He did what He always does. He extended His hand of grace and put me back above the water. In minutes, I was back on track. Here’s what happened next:
I asked God how, and why that incident happened, and, more importantly, how do I avoid an incident like that in the future? Here’s what I learned:
#1 – He pointed out that the episode was brief because, although the commotion caught my attention, it didn’t commandeer or take control of my confession. I never made a comment on it. I never spoke anything that was out of alignment with the word of God.That’s why it was just a moment of doubt and nothing more. By watching my words, I denied doubt permission to infiltrate my heart. This enabled me to cry out to Jesus and get back on track quickly.
# 2- When I asked about how to avoid those moments of doubt in the future, I heard 3 words: Guard Your Gates. The minute I heard it, I knew exactly what it meant. See your 5 natural senses are the gates to your heart (not the organ that pumps blood in your body but), your belief system. This means, we must be mindful of what we let our eyes see, our ears hear and our mouths speak. Why? Because they are the gates to our hearts. They are the top 3 ways the enemy tries to gain access to make us doubt and speak out of alignment with God’s word. The enemy’s goal is to get you to use the power of your tongue to speak death, instead of life. So…Guard the Gates!
We can’t watch everything – Matthew 6:22-23 NIV “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.”
We can’t listen to everything – Mark 4:24 NIV “Consider carefully what you hear…”
We can’t just speak everything – Proverbs 13:3 (KJV) He who guards his mouth preserves his life…
Now, more than ever, we must realize that we are choosing Life or Death with every word we speak. So, the enemy will show us, tell us or try to get us to say anything that contradicts the word of God. He knows that we know, he’s a liar and what he says doesn’t matter. That why he tries to get us to use the power that is in our tongues, against ourselves. But we won’t fall for it. We are LifeSpeakers and we will always . . . GUARD THE GATES!
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 NIV
