It’s Time to Pray

Ever wake up in the middle of the night, in an “eyes-wide-open” way? It’s not the kind of waking up where you ease into alertness and gradually get a sense of what’s happening around you. No, I’m talking about getting a jolt from deep sleep to “PAY ATTENTION NOW!”.

“For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance.” –Philippians 1:19 

My mother always taught me that, when you wake up suddenly, in the wee hours of the morning, it’s time to pray. God is alerting you that someone, somewhere is in dire need for you to go to the Throne of God on their behalf.                          

Years ago, I remember waking up like this and feeling the nudge to pray for a co-worker. It was in the wee hours of a Saturday morning, and I just began to call his name and ask God to protect him and keep him safe. He was a very kind, young man who knew of God but wasn’t living his life for God. 

At work, on the following Monday, I asked him, “Hey Jack (not his real name), where were you and what were you doing Saturday morning between 2-4 am?” Before he could answer, I explained that God had awakened me to pray for him. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped. Then he explained that he was at nightclub when an argument intensified between two patrons and someone pulled out a gun and began shooting. Chaos, panic, and confusion filled the place as he ran out of the building begging God to save his life and help him get out. That’s exactly what God did. And it all happened between 2-4am when God had me praying for him. 

Listen, when you’re awakened in the middle of the night, don’t just focus on getting back to sleep. Recognize that you’re getting an opportunity to partner with God to secure someone’s deliverance.  Be willing to approach His throne on behalf of the person He places on your heart. When you wake up suddenly, in the wee hours of the morning, it’s not time to go back to sleep … It’s time to pray.
