Has anyone ever told you they were going to do something and, the moment they finished speaking, you knew… that they were never going to do what they said?

One day my husband and I ran into a former co-worker of mine. We were genuinely happy to see each other. Over those brief moments, we asked about each other’s children, work, etc. We touched briefly on family milestones – which of our children had graduated from where, the passing of parents, the whereabouts of mutual friends, etc. We were both on our way to appointments and had just a few minutes to chat. As we hugged, she lovingly said, “Girl, I’m going to call you next week so we can get together, okay? It was so good to see you!” 

As we parted ways, my husband asked, “Is she really going to call you next week?,” to which I responded, “Of course not. I won’t speak to her until we run into each other again but, I’ll be happy to see her the next time it happens.”

While I love my former co-worker, I knew her well enough to know that her promise to call next week was just a “parting phrase.” She was never really going to call me next week…and that was okay because I knew her habits with things like that. It doesn’t make her deceitful or anything like that, it’s just that she has established a track record with me of not keeping her word when it comes to appointments for longer visits, phone chats or having lunch. So, honestly, when she tells me something like that, I love her and I’m never disappointed because I don’t trust it. I don’t believe it. I don’t count on it. Why? I know her reputation with me. She has a track record of her not keeping her word. 

“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” –Numbers 23:19

But when I think about Jesus, and all the promises He’s made to me, I know that I can trust Him. I can believe Him. I can count on Him. Why? Because I know HIS reputation with me. He has a track record of keeping His word. 

Whatever promises God has made to you, just hold on to them. Keep believing. Keep praising Him for the promise even when it doesn’t feel like it’s happening; even when it doesn’t look like it’s happening; and even when everyone is telling you to give up because it’s never going to happen. Hold on and remember this: You know HIS Reputation.                You already have a track record of Him keeping HIS Word.
