I woke up this morning with Abraham and Issac on my mind. It took 25 years for Abraham to receive the fulfillment of God’s promise to give him an heir. Can you imagine the love that Abraham and Sarah must’ve had for that child? Imagine the joy that was brought into their lives, in their latter years, after longing for this promised child for so long?
When God tells Abraham to sacrifice Issac, I wonder what was going on in Abraham’s mind. God had already promised Him that He would be the Father of a multitude so, how was that going to happen if He was being told, now, to sacrifice his son of promise.
Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t believe that Abraham prepared the altar in a state of turmoil and desperation. I believe that Abraham was determined to obey God and trust Him to keep His promise—- no matter what. Here’s how the Bible says it:
“he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” Romans 4:20-21 KJV
Abraham was fully persuaded. The same faith that it took for Abraham to believe that God would give him an heir was the same kind of faith that it took to put Isaac on that altar. I believe that Abraham figured God would either raise him up or give them another child. Either way, Abraham had to look beyond what his natural eyes could see and look at his situation through the lens of God’s promise to him. Only then could he see the outcome with the eyes of faith.
Listen, you’re not reading this post by accident. You didn’t find it by coincidence. What precious item has God called you to sacrifice that, seemingly, contradicts the promise He made to you? is it a job? A habit? A dream or what you thought your life should have been?
Obeying God’s instructions will never negate God’s promises. Instead, your obedience works to seal the promise, demonstrate your unwavering faith, aplease God and prove that He is in first place in your life.
Sometimes, just as He did with Abraham, God will ask us to sacrifice the very thing it took so much faith for us to receive. If this ever happens to you, it’s not punishment, it’s an opportunity. Here’s what you should do:
Remember Abraham and his son.
Then, whatever it is, place it on the altar.
LifeSpeak with Me:
I have the Faith of Abraham. I do not stagger, waver or doubt God’s faithfulness to keep His promises to me. When called on to make a sacrifice, I will be completely committed to obedience and fully persuaded that God has victory waiting just beyond what my natural eyes can see. My goal is to please God.
